We drove the Scenic Byway on our way to Spearfish. We made several stops along the way to see Roughlock, Spearfish and Bridal Veil Falls. If you're in the area, definitely take a day to enjoy the can… Full review by chemie71

This is a beautiful drive! There are multiple places you can stop to take a hike, and there’s a beautiful waterfall right off the road. Full review by vorktravel

WE are going with a 23' travel trailer to Devil's Tower/Black Hills, is a travel trailer a problem on the Spearfish Canyon Byway - are there places to park it if we want to go hike at one of the falls?
A:
Yes there is parking. By the way, you won't be able to drive Needles Hwy towing an RV: too narrow, winding and tunnels VERY narrow. A note: We didn't think Spearfish Canyon …

Would I be about able to touch the water at the falls or is it prohibited?

We walked down a path to the stream below the falls. It is very shallow, so we walked across the rocks to a slightly inclined path up to the base of the falls! We stood at the base and it was awesome! We are 60 and had no problem making the little hike! Recommend doing so!

We are staying in Rapid City and want a full day trip to Devils Tower. Looking for some help/advice of how to get the most out of this drive. Thinking of going hwy 90 to DT first and get that over with early. Then head back 90 to hwy 14 and catch Spearfish Canyon Byway. Come out at Deadwood and stop for a bit. Then take 385 to 16 back to Rapid City. We are not hikers, but would love areas to pull off and take a site in or a short drive off the path. Not looking for speed, just want to catch the route with the best sites. Any idea how long this might take? Really appreciate the help.

We tried almost the exact same trip, though we started at the western edge of Badlands NP and headed straight to Devils Tower, then back through Spearfish Canyon. Depending on when you start and how fast you drive, it is a LOT to pack into one day. We ended up skipping Deadwood (which I'm not really sorry about). We did DT in the morning, and our schedule was a little rushed - I wish we had a couple more hours to spend there, as we really enjoyed it but didn't have enough time for a long hike. We did Spearfish Canyon drive on the way back, drove to Lead (near Deadwood), had lunch in the car, and continued on to 385 South (not really scenic) then on to Needles Highway (stunning!) and Iron Road (incredible!). If I had to do it over again, I'd start earlier in the morning, spend more time at Devils Tower, and spend more time on Spearfish Canyon. I'd save Needles Highway and Iron Road for a dedicated day, finishing at Mt. Rushmore for the evening flag lowering ceremony.

We are staying in Keystone right now for 2 more days and are debating whether to drive up to Spearfish Canyon with our 2 teenaged boys for the day or go to Sylvan Lake in Custer. We stayed in Custer for a few days already but didn't see Sylvan Lake. Heard great things about Spearfish though. Any thoughts?
A:
The canyon is more of a drive through activity, Sylvan Lake has some great hiking around the lake and canoeing.
Q:
How much time should you plan to enjoy the byway ?

Several hours depending on number of stops. Great restaurant across from the Spearfish Lodge and also the location of best falls which take about 30 minutes roundtrip to hike down and back up. Two other falls in Canyon worth seeing, too. If you want to visit Deadwood head on through the Canyon for another hour.
