A small town in far eastern Cuba is recovering from flooding that killed at least six people after Hurricane Oscar crossed the island’s eastern coast as a tropical storm with winds and heavy rain.

By Monday afternoon, around 89 percent of customers in the capital had power again, however many residents outside Havana remained without electricity, according to the authorities.

Many Cubans waited in anguish Sunday as electricity on much of the island had yet to be restored days after an island-wide blackout. Their concerns were also raised as Hurricane Oscar made landfall in the southeastern Bahamas and was heading toward their country.

Electricity has been restored to almost 90 percent of Havana, the Cuban capital's energy supplier reported Monday, but several provinces remained without power four days after the start of a nationwide blackout.

Cuba is suspending nonessential activities and school for the next three days as its fends off the twin threats of a grinding national blackout and Hurricane Oscar.

Forecasters said 5 to 10 inches of rain are expected across eastern Cuba through Tuesday, with some isolated locations getting up to 15 inches.
