After the last few entries visited historical and near-future time periods, the next Battlefield game will return to a modern-day setting, aiming to recapture the essence

Respawn and EA, the publisher that owns the studio, shared with IGN a single piece of concept art for the game, which doesn't yet have a title or release date, that appears to show war tearing apart a coastal city, with a nearby area ablaze. The first game in the franchise, Battlefield 1942, launched in 2002 for Windows and Mac.

Vince Zampella has given us a new peek into the future of Battlefield, and he’s planning the franchise’s return to the basics. In an interview with IGN, he revealed that the game is going back to a modern setting, and why. Vince said:
