Michael Andlauer's first year as Ottawa Senators owner has been full of challenges. But a step forward in the plans for a downtown arena is a long-awaited positive sign.

The Ottawa Senators and the National Capital Commission say they've reached an "agreement in principle" to bring a new NHL arena and major events centre to LeBreton Flats.

The major announcement comes around a year after Michael Andlauer purchased the Senators. The eccentric owner has vowed to do right by the fanbase throughout his tenure and a downtown arena is the next step to earning more of their support.
