As had been widely expected, North Carolinians approved an amendment to the state constitution that requires all eligible voters to be U.S. citizens. The Associated Press projected that the amendment will pass not long after polls closed in North Carolina.

The state has over 2,600 polling places open on Election Day, but two will see extended hours due to a delay in the morning.

The only ballot measure North Carolina voters saw statewide this year, called the citizens-only voting amendment, passed. The constitutional amendment, which just needed a majority vote from North Carolinians to go into effect, will change the language about who can vote in elections.

North Carolina shattered its early voting record, with more than half the state’s registered voters casting their ballots before Election Day. By Sunday, 4,465,548 voters had cast their ballots, according to the State Election Board,

Voters in North Carolina and South Carolina approved constitutional amendments that would restrict voting to U.S. citizens in all elections.

North Carolina is among eight states with ballot measures this election specifying that only citizens can vote.

The North Carolina Constitution now clearly prevents noncitizens from voting in any election in the state. This comes after voters decided in favor of a constitutional amendment codifying that into law.
