Established by the Florida Legislature in 1986, the Florida Artists Hall of Fame recognizes persons, living or deceased, who have made significant contributions to the arts in Florida either as performing or practicing artists in individual disciplines.

Over the next eight decades, the Florida Highwaymen group may have created an incredible 250,000 paintings. For almost 40 years, the 26 artists (including one woman) toiled in relative obscurity before being discovered and named in 1995.

The Highwaymen, also referred to as the Florida Highwaymen, are a group of 26 African American landscape artists in Florida. Two of the original artists, Harold Newton, and Alfred Hair, received training from Alfred “Beanie” Backus. It is believed they may have created a body of work of over 200,000 paintings.

Sep 14, 2023 · The Highwaymen are a group of 26 affiliated African American artists who created stylized, impressionistic scenes of Florida’s magnificent forests, swamps, beaches, and sunsets. They painted landscapes throughout the 1950s through the 1970s.
